April 29 is World Day for Safety and Health at Work. Our home is now our “work environment” for many professionals. Home is also kids “work” place, where they are doing their schooling. The home, yard, and neighborhood is their work environment and setting. So, especially with COVID-19, how do kids make their “work” environment a safe and healthy place? First, one of the most basic things to do is wash hands when you change tasks or go back in the house from being in the yard. Remind your younger siblings to do the same, and you might need to help them reach the sink and faucet.
Kids can also help mom or dad clean groceries when they are taken into the house. This is a huge process in itself which each household will need to determine what works for them. Some people keep items outside the home for a certain length of time. Some carefully remove food from their packaging and place them in other containers. All of this needs to be done with thought since you are using hour hands, counters, sink, and then storing in your pantries, refrigerators, and freezers. At the end, remember to wash those hands, again.
When stepping outside the house, remember to stay safe and healthy be wearing masks. This protects the person wearing the masks and those around them that they may encounter. It can be uncomfortable and hot to wear especially as the spring weather is starting to heat up. But think about the health professionals in hospitals and clinics that are wearing masks all day long. And by you wearing masks, you are helping to prevent more people from getting sick and having to go to the hospital. This is showing compassion to working medical professional who may be over worked already.
What are other things you can do to keep your current “work” environment safe and clean? You might want to change your clothing after being outside. Be conscious of covering your mouth with your arm before you sneeze or cough. Avoid touching your face, especially your eyes, nose, and mouth.
